Music Videos and Interviews: What I learned over Winter Break

I made three videos over Christmas break. The first one I talked about in a previous post. The other two I shall now talk about.

Music Video:

First of all, let's discuss the best video we made over break, which was a new years eve themed music video to the song "We Found Love" by Rihanna. Make sure to watch in HD!

I thought it turned out pretty well! The keying (green-screenin') worked really well and the shots of fireworks in the background make it look really cool.

Read on for more about this video and the awkward interview!

In more detail for people like me who like to edit or want to know what I thought was wrong with the video:

I first started with a sequence where I synchronized three tracks (David's video, madeleine's video, and the song itself) using the start of the song. Then removed the audio of the green screened tracks. Then I used premiere's ultra key (which worked beautifully) and eight-point garbage matte so that david and madeleine were in limbo--everything but them was transparent. Here was probably my only problem. Since the green screen did not fill the frame, you see David's and Madeleine's arms get cut off before they actually go off frame. This bothered me to no end. But, there was no other way to position the green screen in order to fill the whole frame, so I had to deal with it (and it doesn't really look that bad). Then, I made a new sequence, and drag and dropped in the other sequence into the new sequence. I right clicked and enabled multicamera. Then I opened up the multicamera monitor and it was just a matter of clicking between the two shots while watching through the video. Then I got the fireworks clips, and if they were especially good or the shot of david or madeleine was bad, they were shown over the lip-syncing video, but otherwise they were under it so david and madeleine were superimposed over it. My favorite part of this was that david's glasses would reflect the green, and that keyed out so it looked like the fireworks were reflecting on david's glasses, like he was standing there or in front of a huge monitor.

The Failed Interview:

I had this "brilliant" idea to give David a talk show and call it "David." (with the period). It seemed like a good idea to David, Madeleine, Michael B. (who was still a member of Entourage at that time...see his post) and the others we showed it to. He would have a little monologue segment, then a segment where a correspondent did something funny (like Sadie on the Street or Mad @ Mead), then his special guest of the episode would come on to cook and be interviewed. Well, we tried interviewing Michael McCord for the "First Episode"--this is what happened.

Note: It's a rough cut. I didn't bother to edit out the tripod in one of the shots or edit most of the uhhhs and my laughs. I just wanted to edit it up to show people it--someone would find it at least mildly funny.

Yeah. It was bad. The pauses and some of david's faces were funny, but we realized this would not be a show. We cooked as well, but I didn't even try to edit that... it was awkward. I expected it to be awkward but for that awkwardness to be funny. David, he and I realized, was not meant for hosting his own show and being forced to be funny. But, that didn't bother me. I was excited to edit his monologue on the green screen and the interview with multi-camera, but I realize I could do both of those with future music videos, so I was alright.

So, In Conclusion:

I learned over break that Music Videos are fun to make. I learned how to do multi-camera. I learned that we should not attempt to do talk shows. We started to plan out our next short film,  , which we are planning on filming later in January. It is still simple, but has a larger cast and better plot. I'm excited to try it out. I hope you'll be watching over our journey in film. As usual, be sure to share your thoughts about our music video, the interview, and future films.
